I had to write a villanelle style poem for my college writing class, and I thought I would share it here. It is about the loss of a very good friend, and the feelings around losing him inspired this piece. (This is my original work, and I own the rights to it)
You No Longer Know
Night was dark when we had to let you go,
This memory will never fade away;
Now so many things you no longer know.
The scene was surreal the time fate took hold,
Nobody saw it play out quite that way,
Night was dark when we had to let you go.
Time has moved on, and children have all grown,
Life is not the way you left it that day,
Now so many things you no longer know.
If only that day you chose not to show,
We all would not know of this dreadful pain;
Night was dark when we had to let you go.
Our circle of friends now has a big hole,
And our children grew apart, they don’t play;
Now so many things you no longer know.
The accident was preventable though,
I wish time would have allowed you to stay;
Night was dark when we had to let you go,
Now so many things you no longer know. ©
